The University of Auckland is home to four of New Zealand's government-funded National Centres of Research Excellence.

UniServices works in collaboration with these centres and has had a key role in the establishment of a number of other business-orientated centres of expertise based in Auckland.

National Centre for Educational Leadership (CEL) -  a world class educational leadership centre that is inclusive of all levels of educational leaders in all types of schools, educational organisations and early childhood centres. Its work informs high quality national and international research which links educational leadership to student outcomes.

  2. Woolf Fisher - Established in 1998 with funds from the Woolf Fisher Trust, the Woolf Fisher Research Centre is an internationally recognised research centre for the development of education and schooling success for diverse communities within New Zealand, with a particular focus on Māori and Pasifika communities.

    The centre is located in the Faculty of Education at The University of Auckland.

    In addition to promoting research-based educational interventions, the centre provides a vehicle for research expertise for local communities, contributes to developing teacher education programmes which are responsive to local needs and goals, promotes tertiary education pathways and contributes to research at The University of Auckland.

  3. English Language Academy (ELA) - The University of Auckland English Language Academy (ELA) teaches English language programmes for students interested in pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, as well as specialist English and Teacher-training courses. Located adjacent to The University of Auckland campus in downtown Auckland City, the English Language Academy provides a modern, spacious learning environment.

  1. Clinical Trials Research Unit (CTRU) - The Clinical Trials Research Unit (CTRU) is a multi-disciplinary group of health researchers that has forged an international reputation of studies into the causes, prevention and treatment of leading health problems.

    The CTRU has a 20 year history of conducting high-quality research, in particular undertaking large multi-centre randomised trials of novel interventions for improving health. Currently the CTRU has two prestigious Health Research Council Research Programmes involving trials on smoking cessation, cardiovascular risk reduction, improved nutrition and greater physical activity.

    Our Research Services group undertakes contract data management and statistics work for external clients. The CTRU is a part of the University of Auckland, New Zealand's largest and most successful university, ranked within the top 50 universities in the world.

  2. Liggins Institute - The Liggins Institute was the first large-scale research institute established by The University of Auckland. It is committed to world-class biomedical and clinical research in areas of major health importance.

    It is one of the world’s leading centres for research on fetal and child health, growth and development, breast cancer, nutrition, epigenetics and evolutionary medicine.

    The research approaches problems of children’s and women’s health from a number of angles designed to rapidly translate discoveries in basic science into clinical applications, strategies to improve public health and knowledge-based enterprises in the biotechnology sector.

  3. Immunisation Advisory Centre (IMAC) - The Immunisation Advisory Centre (IMAC) is a nationwide organisation based at the School of Population Health at The University of Auckland. 

    Our aim is to provide New Zealanders with a local source of independent, factual information including benefits and risks regarding immunisation, and vaccine-preventable disease. The information we provide is based on international and New Zealand medical research and is supported by a large network of health professionals.

  4. Werry Centre The Werry Centre for Child and Adolescent Mental Health is a national centre and was launched by the Hon Annette King, Minister of Health, at the Waipapa Marae at Auckland University in March 2003. It is based in the Department of Psychological Medicine at the University of Auckland. It is multidisciplinary and multicultural.

    The aims of the Werry Centre are to improve the mental health of New Zealand young people by:
    • providing training of a high quality to mental health professionals;
    • promoting research in child and adolescent mental health;
    • advocating for mental health needs of children and adolescents in New Zealand;  and
    • supporting the child and adolescent mental health workforce nationally.

  5. Goodfellow Unit - The Goodfellow Unit offers continuing education services to general practitioners, nurses and other professionals in primary health care. We are an independent, dedicated, educational unit housed in the Department of General Practice and Primary Health Care, School of Population Health, The University of Auckland. The future of general practitioners and their colleagues depends on their being able to keep up to date, and also to develop new skills that may lead to specialised qualifications and new opportunities for growth of their practice. We aim to provide such information and services.

  6. Māori SIDS -Māori SIDS has over 15 years experience, delivering national and regional services with a focus on co-ordination and provision of evidence based research. We aim to assist whānau, health professionals and communities to reduce the incidence of SIDS and SUDI (Sudden Unexpected Deaths in Infancy). We also advocate on the wider issues that affect the health and well-being of mokopuna Māori and whānau.

  7. Centre for Health Services Research Policy  (CHSRP) - The Centre for Health Services Research and Policy (CHSRP) is a multi-disciplinary research centre within the School of Population Health, University of Auckland. CHSRP undertakes research with a primary focus on the funding, provision, evaluation, organisation and management of health services; and the development and implementation of health policy.

Survey Research Unit (SRU) - The Survey Research Unit was established in 2002 to coordinate survey research at The University of Auckland, manage the CATI (Computer Assisted Telephone Interview) resources and provide an organisational unit for staff with expertise in survey research. It is operated by a Manager, Director and a Management Committee. Involved in externally funded survey research and internal use of the CATI resource - a university-wide facility - it is based in the School of Population Health and has contract projects with the Ministry of Health and other agencies.

Auckland MRI Research Group (AMRG) - The Auckland MRI Research Group (AMRG) has researched, developed and tested clinical image analysis software in association with Auckland UniServices Limited. Part of this software has been licensed to one of the largest global MRI providers, Siemens Medical Systems. AMRG is recognised by Siemens as their no. 1 cardiac development site in the world.

    Dedicated staff have extensive experience in the running of international pharmaceutical trials including study design, protocol definition, paperwork, site training (internationally), image transfer by CDROM and internet, and analysis and reporting of results. Extensive operating procedures have been developed for data management, including RAID server backup, DVD and CDROM archiving, documentation, database management and storage in fireproof safes.

  13. Auckland Cancer Society Research Centre ( ACSRC) - Regarded internationally as one of the world's leading anti-cancer drug development laboratories, the Auckland Cancer Society Research Centre is this country's acknowledged heavy hitter in drug development.

    Since its inception in 1956, the ACSRC has published nearly 1000 papers in international scientific and medical journals, and filed more than 100 patent applications for new anti-cancer drugs.  In that time, the centre has developed eight cancer drugs which have gone into clinical trial. The ACSRC has the distinction of being the first laboratory in the Southern Hemisphere to discover, trial and bring an anti-cancer drug into clinical use.

    Jointly managed by the University of Auckland and the Auckland Cancer Society, the ACSRC has grown to include over 80 researchers. Under the direction of world-respected authorities, Professor Bill Denny and Bruce Baguley,  the centre continues to extend its hard earned reputation for getting results and making discoveries that give cancer sufferers hope.

  14. Human Nutrition Unit - The Human Nutrition Unit is a nutrition research facility within the University of Auckland, New Zealand’s most prestigious and largest University.

    The Unit undertakes research to identify dietary components which promote health and prevent disease.

    The trials are carried out both as academic and commercial collaborations.

  15. Growing up in New Zealand - Growing Up in New Zealand is a new longitudinal study of New Zealand-born children, led by the University of Auckland, to follow a group of 7,800 children from before they are born until they become adults (about 20 years old).

    Growing Up in New Zealand is designed to get good information about raising happy, healthy children so we can improve the lives of all New Zealand children.

    We're inviting all pregnant women living* in the AucklandCounties-Manukau and Waikato DHB regions, with babies due before 25 March 2010, to enrol in Growing Up in New Zealand.

Centre for Advanced MRI (CAMRI) The Centre for Advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (CAMRI) at The University of Auckland is the first MRI venture in New Zealand to focus on high-end research work as well as routine clinical imaging. Drawing on a successful track record of research collaborations at the University, CAMRI delivers MRI research expertise and resources to leading commercial and government organisations. 

    Established in 2004, we have a close collaboration with Siemens and enjoy ready access to the latest equipment and software developments for advanced research and clinical protocols.

    We work with a wide range of clients, including District Health Boards, private sector researchers and have been involved in several worldwide clinical trials.  CAMRI is Accredited by International Accreditation New Zealand and is an Affiliated Provider for Southern Cross Healthcare and a health services provider for the Accident Compensation Corporation.

  17. Centre for Asian Health Research and Evaluation - The Centre for Asian Health Research and Evaluation (CAHRE), a research unit at the University of Auckland, is based at the School of Population Health (SOPH)
    in Tamaki. The centre has a strong focus on current Asian Health issues, and seeks to develop strategic ways to improve and visualise the health status of the fastest growing population in New Zealand.

  1. Institute for Earth Science and Engineering (IESE) The backbone of IESE is its engagement in pure, applied, and relevant research and professional training focused on the accessible earth – that portion from which our resources come and whose processes and hazards impact people. IESE seeks to conduct this research in partnership with industry, government, and other universities.

    Based at the University of Auckland, IESE's academic home is in the Faculty of Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering.  Its members bring experience in research and training programmes from around the world.

  2. Light Metals Research Centre (LMRC) - The Light Metals Research Centre was founded in 2002 to meet a global need for a dedicated single-site light  metals research, development and training facilities.  The Centre is part of Auckland UniServices.

    Light Metals Research Centre and Faculty of Engineering are hosting a 3 week intensive and comprehensive programme in Bahrain in Nov., 2010.  The course covers both theoretical and practical aspects, with a dynamic approach including visits to operating smelters, workshop discussions, pre/post assignments, rigorous assessment and examination in order to maintain a high, university level standard.  It is designed for engineers working in fields related to aluminium electrolysis at all levels.  For more details please visit www.lightmetals.co.nz .

  3. Institute for Innovation in Biotechnology (IIB) - The IIB provides industry access to a purpose-built 10,000m2 research building (expansion due for completion in 2010) that includes fully equipped laboratories and high-tech equipment facilities.

    We serve the full life sciences spectrum, including health, food and environmental biotech, and help co-locating companies fast-track R&D by leasing access to the resources of The University of Auckland and the School of Biological Sciences (SBS).

    With 180 staff and 120 PhD students, the SBS is home to several internationally recognised research centres, including the Maurice Wilkins Centre for Molecular Biodiscovery, the Centre for Genomics and Proteomics and the Bioinformatics Institute.

  4. Centre for Software Innovation (CSI) - The Centre for Software Innovation (CSI) provides a bridge between researchers in Information and Communication Technology at the University of Auckland and the ICT industry. CSI, an Auckland Uniservices Ltd Innovation Centre, is embedded within the Computer Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering Departments. CSI has a strong track record of working with commercial and government ICT organisations to enhance their innovation potential and develop smarter solutions more quickly. Our approach is to engage with industry in a broad manner, both through direct conultancy and contract research, and via a suite of more focussed programmes, such as Academy and Extenda. We also provide research project management support to a range of third party programmes.

  5. Wine Science - In the last twenty years, the global wine industry has become increasingly internationalised and sophisticated. Along with other new-world producers, the New Zealand wine industry has grown rapidly. This success has created demands for highly trained and skilled participants and for locally focussed scientific research of the highest standards.

    The Wine Science Postgraduate Programme at the University of Auckland caters for these demands. The programme uses the experiences of winemaking in New Zealand to highlight the multiple dimensions and applications of wine science. A central theme is that wine science is more than simply winemaking. The programme is organised around the understanding of wine production as a process that runs from the vine to the mouth. Courses examine the science of grape production and winemaking, and analytical techniques in winemaking.

  6. Polymer Electronics Research Centre (PERC) - The Polymer Electronics Research Centre (PERC) within the University of Auckland was established in 2003 to promote, facilitate and advance research in the field of polymer electronics in the University.

  7. Polymer electronics, at the centre of the molecular nanotechnology revolution, promises an exceptional range of future research and development opportunities. The Centre brings together 15 research academics from Science, Medicine and Engineering to develop new polymer electronics materials for sectors such as Health & Bioelectronics, Polymer Electronics in Devices, Corrosion, Sustainable Energy and Molecular Circuitry. The research projects are highly interdisciplinary and all require complementary knowledge contributions from the various disciplines.

  8. Leigh Marine - The Leigh Marine Laboratory is situated on the northeast coast of New Zealand, at 36deg. 16' S, 174deg. 48' E. It is about 100 km north of the city of Auckland, and bathed by the warm-temperate East Auckland Current (13-22 ° C). As a field research base the Leigh Laboratory has the twin advantages of access to a wide range of unspoiled marine habitats accessible in almost all weather, as well as relative proximity to a large urban centre and the full resources of New Zealand's largest University. Although Leigh is a small coastal village, it boasts several cafes and its population is a mix of fishers, farmers, Auckland commuters and - marine scientists

Engineering:

 

  1. Energy Fuels Research Unit (EFRU) - Vehicles are a necessary part of life for many of us today. They require energy from fuels to run. Engine testing enables us to design systems which run with greater efficiency. The Energy and Fuels Research Unit (EFRU) specialises in fuels, advanced thermodynamic cycles, heat exchangers (testing, design, analysis), refrigeration (new cycles, alternative refrigerants and analysis), and energy efficiency (modelling and optimisation). The EFRU was established in 1978 (formerly the Vehicle and Fuels Research Unit - VFRU) and has been at the forefront of research and development in the vehicle alternative fuels industry in New Zealand. The EFRU has access to, and has developed extensive facilities and capabilities within the internal combustion engine and general vehicle research area. The unit is also able to offer testing and research services in other areas of the thermodynamics field utilising facilities available within the laboratory.

  2. The Bioengineering Institute -

    The Auckland Bioengineering Institute (ABI) is a cross-faculty research centre. Our research deals with the application of mathematical and engineering sciences to biology and human physiology. We aim to improve understanding of physiological processes and the diagnosis and treatment of injury or disease.

  3. Centre for Advanced Composite Materials (CACM) - The Centre for Advanced Composite Materials (CACM), which was established in 2002, is a joint venture between the University of Auckland, SCION (Forest Research) and other industrial participants utilising government research funding. The goal of this Centre is to bring together the complementary research capabilities of the University of Auckland, Forest Research and other partners in order to conduct pre-competitive research into advanced composite materials and manufacturing processes.

  4. The Plastics Centre of Excellence (PECOE ) - Expanding the knowledge base of the Plastics Industry  through the benefits of research, leading edge technology and co-ordinated education programmes.

  5. Research Centre for Surface and Materials Science (RCSMS) - RCSMS is unique in materials science and
    engineering in NZ, it is a research facility available to University researchers and a commercial facility available to industry. RCSMS specialises in materials characterisation, in terms of composition and structure, from the very near surface to the bulk of the material.

    Issues with composition or microstructure can manifest themselves in a number of ways, anything from failing adhesion to suspect particles. Using state-of-the-art imaging and analysis techniques, RCSMS offers the opportunity to identify the cause of problems, potentially saving your company time and money.
